cycling guide is never far from the nearest hospital, but “not far” can still mean an hour, and language barriers complicate things further. What guides and the support vehicle carry reflects that reality.

On the Lead Guide’s Body

The lead guide rides at the front, setting pace and navigating, so everything they carry has to be accessible while riding.

Communication: a two-way radio connecting to the sweep guide and support vehicle for real-time coordination, plus a mobile phone with a local SIM as backup for calls, weather updates, and navigation.

Navigation and information: a laminated route card with kilometer markers, elevation profile, rest stops, hospital locations, emergency numbers, and alternative routes. It’s waterproof and doesn’t depend on a battery.

Quick fixes: a compact multi-tool covering most trailside adjustments (a loose handlebar, a slipping saddle, a dropped chain), a small tube of chamois cream for riders developing hotspots, and travel-size sunscreen, since the tropical sun catches people off guard faster than they expect.

Energy and money: two energy bars, not for the guide but for a rider who bonks unexpectedly between rest stops, and cash in small bills for emergencies or unexpected costs.

On the Sweep Guide’s Bike

The sweep guide rides behind the last rider, always, and carries more repair capacity as a result: two spare inner tubes matched to the fleet’s wheel sizes, three tire levers, a mini pump, three chain quick links matched to the fleet’s chains, a chain tool, a spare brake cable, a spare gear cable, and a larger multi-tool that includes a spoke wrench for truing a wheel enough to make it rideable. A small first aid kit covers adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze and tape, and ibuprofen for the minor stuff that doesn’t need the support vehicle’s full medical kit.

In the Support Vehicle

This is where the heavier equipment lives.

Bicycle equipment: two complete spare bikes pre-adjusted to common sizes, a floor pump with a gauge, a complete tool kit (bottom bracket and cassette tools, chain whip, headset press, cable cutters, full hex and Torx sets), spare parts inventory (4 tubes per bike size, 2 spare tires, 4 sets of brake pads, derailleur hangers for each bike model, cables, chain links, spare pedals and cleats), and chain lubricant, degreaser, and rags for daily maintenance.

Medical kit: wound care (sterile gauze in multiple sizes, non-stick dressings, elastic and triangular bandages, cloth and waterproof medical tape, butterfly closures, trauma shears, tweezers, disposable gloves), medications (pain relievers, anti-diarrheal, antihistamines, antacids, oral rehydration salts, anti-nausea medication, aspirin for cardiac events, antibiotic and hydrocortisone cream), and emergency equipment (a SAM splint, instant cold packs, an emergency blanket, a CPR face shield, a digital thermometer, a pulse oximeter). If any client has disclosed a severe allergy, an epinephrine auto-injector is carried as well, since people sometimes don’t know they’re allergic to something until they react to it. The kit is organized in a labeled, waterproof container, inventoried weekly, with expiration dates tracked.

Hydration and nutrition: a cooler restocked with ice daily, at least 3 liters of bottled water per rider per day, electrolyte drinks and tablets, and snacks covering a range of tastes and needs.

Comfort and logistics: a pop-up shade tent for stops without natural shade, folding chairs, wet wipes and hand sanitizer, and backup sunscreen and insect repellent.

Vehicle safety: a fire extinguisher, warning triangles, high-visibility vests, flashlights with spare batteries, and phone chargers.

Documentation and navigation: physical maps as a backup to GPS, copies of client medical files and emergency contacts, incident report forms, and a hospital location card for each day’s route with name, address, phone number, and GPS coordinates.

Why So Much Redundancy

Looking at this list as a whole, the pattern is deliberate redundancy: two communication methods, two people who can do basic repairs, two spare bikes, maps in both digital and physical form, medical supplies split across the sweep guide and the vehicle. Radios die, phones lose signal, bikes break — the question worth asking about any piece of equipment is what happens if it fails, and a setup with no backup for something important is a real risk, not a minor inconvenience.

Most riders never interact with most of this inventory directly, and that’s the intended outcome. Every energy bar is a bonk that doesn’t happen, every spare tube is a flat tire that doesn’t end someone’s day, every bandage is a scrape that gets treated instead of getting worse. The inventory exists for the version of the day where something does go wrong, so that version of the day still ends reasonably.

I asked a Vietnam cycling guide to empty his pockets.
We were at a rest stop on day three of a tour.
